Julie Artis welcomes Elizabeth Duvivier, founder of Squam Art Workshops. They discuss the founding of Squam, how it has evolved, and how Elizabeth - somewhat surprisingly - found herself leading creative retreats and a large community of like-minded souls.
In this interview, you’ll hear about:
The origins of Squam Art Workshops, a creative retreat that began as a one-time event but grew into a global community.
Elizabeth and Julie discuss major life changes, including career shifts and divorce, emphasizing the importance of listening to one's inner voice.
Following your intuition and making decisions that resonate deeply - in life and work - even if they go against conventional wisdom.
How Squam adapted during the pandemic, creating an online community to maintain connections and support.
Elizabeth’s bio:
Elizabeth Duvivier is the author of Stories For My Sister. She is a writer, painter, teacher, dog nut, meadow walker, and someone who has been known to walk out into the garden and forget she has left oatmeal cooking on the stove (read:  oatmeal scorcher).
She loves long lazy hours to write (for days and days), wild pagan dinner parties, the smell of grated ginger, and wandering into the mystic, among other things.
In 2008, she founded Squam Art Workshops and has hosted more than 37 art retreats for the specific purpose of nurturing our hearts with creative play in a beautiful, natural setting.

In this episode of Her Leading Story, I interview Rosanne, McTyre, PhD about her “zig-zag” career in epidemiology. Rosanne currently owns her own business that combines her skills in science and communication with her vast network of scientists and doctors. Her path to entrepreneurship was filled with different experiences and opportunities in academia, the federal government, hospitals, and corporations…. and we dig into it all in this interview.
What we talk about…..
Rosanne’s current business and what she loves about it
How Rosanne wanted to major in studio arts (to her parents' dismay) but ended up falling in love with biology and epidemiology
The work-family challenges Rosanne faced as she navigated earning an MA and a PhD while starting a family.
Rosanne’s variety of work experiences, and how she used those experiences to learn what she enjoyed doing…. and what she didn’t
The importance of relying on intuition and knowing what you want when making career and life decisions
How critical Rosanne’s extensive network has been to both her career opportunities as well as staring her own business.
Why Rosanne loves mentoring young scientists about their work.
Learning never stops! At 71, Rosanne just earned her certificate in Spanish - English interpretation and is starting to volunteer at a health clinic in her area.
About Rosanne
Rosanne McTyre is a card-carrying epidemiologist. She is President of Semafore Scientific Strategies LLC, a scientific consulting firm located in Washington, DC. In this episode of Her Leading Story, I interview Dr. Adia Gooden about her journey from grad school in psychology to owning her own coaching and speaking business, and her passion for supporting women to believe in their unconditional worth.
What we talk about…..
Adia’s experience in her PhD program, and how the goals she set for herself led to a ton of unnecessary stress (and, as she reflects, these goals were probably an attempt at the time to prove her self-worth).
How Adia’s “dream job” turned out to be work she really disliked doing, and what she learned from that experience
How Adia discovered her love of public speaking and how she got started - her TedX talk from 2019 has over 1 million views!
Adia’s view on the difference between therapy and coaching
Adia’s forthcoming book, Promoting Black Women’s Mental Health.
Why coaching women about unconditional self-worth is so important to her, her own journey with feeling worthy, and how essential it has been in her life and work.
Adia had a baby last year, and talks about how she’s balanced motherhood and entrepreneurship.
About Adia

In this solo episode of Her Leading Story, I talk about the ways I'm learning to coach the unconscious mind - and tools that I give my clients so that they can practice self-directed neuro-plasticity if they want to make a change.
What I talk about…..
How awareness and clarity are KEY, but not always enough to motivate us into action!
Human emotions and how our brain is constantly trying to keep us safe.
Tools that can serve as “pattern interrupts” when you feel yourself activated and going down a habituated path of avoidance, fear, or anxiety.
Other methods I’m learning about how to notice and move through these feelings rather than stuffing them down.
How I will approach coaching women on career and leadership differently moving forward.
LINK to the coaching certification I’m currently completing, in case you are curious :).

In this episode of Her Leading Story, I interview my cousin, Laura Spining, about her career that starts in the office of then Senator Al Gore and includes working on the 1992 Presidential campaign, at a telecommunications trade association, and in the private sector. After taking a couple years off when her kids were little, she joined the Department of Commerce and is now the Deputy Associate Administrator of the National Telecommunications Information Agency.
What we talk about…..
Laura’s commitment to service and the responsibility she feels as a steward of taxpayer money.
Her experience in developing a high performing team, especially how it’s different to do so in a federal agency as compared to the private sector
Laura’s favorite book, that she reads every year, is How Will You Measure Your Life? by Clayton Christensen.
The challenges of hybrid work schedules.
The importance of kindness (versus nice-ness) in the workplace and how that’s related to having difficult conversations with colleagues.
What Laura learned from different mentors throughout her career.
Our grandparents and what we learned from them about life and leadership.
About Laura

Spining leads efforts to engage Tribal leaders, federal agencies, state leaders, non-profits, and other organizations committed to high-speed, affordable, and reliable Internet service for all Americans. 05: Figuring Out What You Want

Wednesday Feb 15, 2023

Wednesday Feb 15, 2023

In this solo episode of Her Leading Story, I share more about my own career path, and especially how I have attempted to move into positions that play to my strengths AND light me up.
What I talk about…..
How I felt socialized to “climb the ladder”…. And then realized along the way that I didn’t really know what I wanted or enjoyed doing.
The “decades” exercise - a way to look back on your life, reflect on your interests, and notice themes
The “energy and flow” exercise - notice what you are doing currently and what makes you feel alive (and vice versa - what drags you down).
